Chiang Mai Night Safari

Chiang Mai Night Safari is a wildlife park in Hang Dong district, just outside Chiang Mai city, built around the idea of viewing animals after dark rather than during the day. Opened in 2006, it was the first night safari in Thailand and the third in the world, and a visit runs for a few hours in the evening.

The visit combines a tram ride with a walking trail. The tram takes you through two zones of the park, with recorded commentary pointing out the animals and their nocturnal behavior as you pass. Afterward, you continue on foot along a trail beside the park's lake, moving at your own pace to look into the enclosures. This is where you get the closest views, watching animals such as jaguars, clouded leopards and caracals as they move around in conditions much closer to their natural rhythm than a daytime zoo visit allows.
