What is an Ethiopia eVisa?

The Ethiopia eVisa is a fully digital travel authorisation issued by the Immigration and Citizenship Service of Ethiopia — Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia. It is applied for entirely online through the official Ethiopian eVisa portal — evisa.gov.et — and issued electronically as a PDF document to the applicant's registered email address. There is no physical sticker visa for the eVisa — it is fully digital. The approved eVisa PDF must be printed and presented at the Ethiopian immigration counter upon arrival.

Is There a Sticker Visa for Ethiopia?

Yes — but only for specific cases. Here is the precise distinction:

eVisa (Fully Digital — No Sticker):

• Available to citizens of all countries worldwide for tourist and business visits
• Applied for entirely online through evisa.gov.et
• Valid only for entry through Addis Ababa Bole International Airport
• Issued as a PDF document — no physical sticker

Physical Sticker Visa (Embassy Visa):

• Required for ALL travellers entering Ethiopia through any land border crossing
• Physical visas must be obtained from Ethiopian diplomatic and consular missions before departure — the eVisa is not valid at land border crossings
• Also required for visitors travelling for purposes not covered by the eVisa

Visa on Arrival:

• Available at Addis Ababa Bole International Airport for nationals of specific countries including UAE and KSA nationals
• Issued as a physical stamp upon arrival

Three Entry Routes — Ethiopia

Route 1 — Visa Exemption (No Visa Required)

Only two nationalities are fully exempt from any visa requirement to enter Ethiopia:

• Kenya — Kenyan nationals with a valid passport may enter Ethiopia without any visa
• Djibouti — Djiboutian nationals with a valid passport may enter Ethiopia without any visa

All other nationalities — including UAE, KSA, and Indian nationals — require either an eVisa, Visa on Arrival, or Embassy Visa.

Route 2 — Visa on Arrival

Ethiopia has officially launched a Visa on Arrival service at Addis Ababa Bole International Airport for tourists from specific countries. Visa on Arrival is only available at Addis Ababa Bole International Airport — it is not available at any land border crossing.

UAE Nationals — Visa on Arrival: UAE nationals may obtain a tourist Visa on Arrival at Addis Ababa Bole International Airport. UAE nationals may alternatively apply for the Ethiopia eVisa online through evisa.gov.et before travel — both options are available.

KSA Nationals — Visa on Arrival: Saudi Arabian nationals are also on the Visa on Arrival eligible list — they may obtain a tourist Visa on Arrival at Addis Ababa Bole International Airport. Alternatively, KSA nationals may apply for the Ethiopia eVisa online before travel.

Route 3 — eVisa (Online Application)

Citizens of all countries worldwide — including Indian nationals, Pakistani nationals, Bangladeshi nationals, and all other nationalities — are eligible to apply for the Ethiopia tourist eVisa online through the official portal — evisa.gov.et — before travel. The eVisa is the recommended and most convenient option for all nationalities.

Important — eVisa Entry Restriction: The Ethiopia eVisa is only valid for entry through Addis Ababa Bole International Airport. Travellers entering through any land border must obtain a physical visa from an Ethiopian diplomatic mission before departure. This is a critical condition that must not be overlooked.

Do You Need an Ethiopia Visa? — UAE, India & KSA

UAE Nationals: UAE nationals may obtain a Visa on Arrival at Addis Ababa Bole International Airport — or may apply for the eVisa online before travel through evisa.gov.et. Both options are available and equally valid.

UAE Residents of Other Nationalities: The applicable entry route is determined by the passport held. All nationalities are eligible for the Ethiopia eVisa — UAE residents must apply online before travel regardless of their passport nationality.

KSA Nationals: Saudi Arabian nationals may obtain a Visa on Arrival at Addis Ababa Bole International Airport — or may apply for the eVisa online before travel. Both options are available.

KSA Residents of Other Nationalities: All nationalities are eligible for the Ethiopia eVisa — KSA residents must apply online before travel based on their passport nationality.

Indian Nationals: India is eligible for the Ethiopia eVisa — Indian nationals must apply for the eVisa online through evisa.gov.et before travel.

Permitted Activities — Tourism:

• Sightseeing, leisure travel, visiting family or friends, cultural experiences, and recreational activities

Not Permitted:

• Paid employment — a separate work visa is required
• Any activity inconsistent with the declared purpose of visit

Transit: Regardless of nationality, travellers in transit do not require a visa if they arrive by air, remain in the permitted transit area, and depart by air within 12 hours.

Important Entry Requirements

• Passport must be valid for at least 6 months from the intended date of arrival in Ethiopia — passengers with less than 6 months validity will be denied entry.
• The eVisa PDF must be printed and presented at the immigration counter upon arrival.
• Sufficient funds to cover the duration of stay.
• Return or onward travel ticket.
• UAE nationals visiting Ethiopia are required to register on the Tawajudi service at mofa.gov.ae — the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs travel registration service.
• Travellers carrying amounts exceeding USD 3,000 must declare this to customs officials upon entry by completing a declaration form at the airport.

Processing Time

• Standard eVisa processing: 3 days from the date of application submission.

• The validity of the visa starts counting from the intended date of entry into Ethiopia.

Visa Extension

The Ethiopia eVisa can be extended before it expires — travellers must visit in person the Head Office of the Immigration and Citizenship Service in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Extensions are not available online.
