Doi Inthanon National Park

The tour to Doi Inthanon National Park runs a full day, from around 5:30 am to 6:30 pm, taking in Thailand's highest peak at 2,565 metres, often called the Roof of Thailand, along with cool mountain air, the Royal Twin Pagodas and Vachiratharn Falls.

Trails and viewpoints

The drive climbs steadily out of the Chiang Mai valley into cooler air and denser forest, with stops at viewpoints along the way to take in the layered mountain ridgelines. Mild nature trails lead through the forest, past ferns, moss-covered trees and the occasional cascade, giving a change of pace from the vehicle before reaching the park's better-known stops.

The Royal Twin Pagodas

Amid manicured gardens near the summit stand the Royal Twin Pagodas, built to honour the King and Queen of Thailand. Their tiered stupas rise above terraced flower beds, with mountain views stretching out on clear days. The gardens surrounding the stupas are planted with seasonal flowers, adding color against the mountain backdrop, and the spot is one of the more popular photo stops on the mountain.

Vachiratharn Falls

The tour also stops at Vachiratharn Falls, an 80-metre cascade dropping over a granite escarpment on the way up to the summit. The spray from the falls cools the air noticeably, and there is time to walk close to the viewing point and take photos before continuing on. Further down the mountain road, additional viewpoints and short trails offer more chances to see the park's forest cover before the drive continues toward Chiang Mai.
