What is a UK Standard Visitor Visa?

A Standard Visitor visa is the official travel authorisation issued by UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) that permits foreign nationals to enter the United Kingdom temporarily for tourism, business, or family visits. All nationals of UAE, India, and KSA are required to obtain a Standard Visitor visa before travelling to the United Kingdom. The visa must be applied for online and secured prior to departure — entry into the UK cannot be sought at the border without a valid visa.

You can usually stay in the UK for up to 6 months per visit, regardless of the validity period of your visa.

What is Permitted — Tourism & Business

Tourism: You may visit the UK for leisure, holidays, and sightseeing; to visit family or friends; for medical treatment; or for short recreational courses of up to 30 days.

Business: As a Standard Visitor for business, you can attend meetings, conferences, seminars, and interviews; negotiate and sign contracts; consult with business associates; and carry out specific activities permitted under the Standard Visitor rules. You cannot work for a UK company or as a self-employed person unless coming for a specifically permitted paid engagement.

What is NOT permitted: You cannot do paid or unpaid work for a UK company, claim public funds, live in the UK for long periods through frequent or successive visits, or marry or register a civil partnership — for which a separate Marriage Visitor visa is required.

Visa Validity, Service Type & Processing Time

A UK Standard Visitor visa is available in four validity options — 6 months, 2 years, 5 years, and 10 years. Regardless of the validity selected, no single visit may exceed 6 months. The validity and number of entries are determined solely by UKVI based on the applicant's profile, travel history, and purpose of visit.

For each validity option, applicants may choose from three service types — Standard, Priority, or Super Priority — which determine the processing time for the visa decision.

Important notes on service types:

• Standard Service is the default processing track. Processing typically takes between 15 to 30 working days from the date of your Visa Application Centre appointment, and in some cases may extend further depending on application volume and complexity. This does not include weekends or UK public holidays.
• Priority Service guarantees a decision within 5 working days of your VAC appointment. Availability is subject to the Visa Application Centre in your country — confirm availability before applying.
• Super Priority Service guarantees a decision by the end of the next working day following your VAC appointment. If your appointment falls on a weekend or bank holiday, the decision will be made within 2 working days. Availability is subject to the VAC in your country.
• In all three service types, processing may take longer if the Home Office requires additional information or documentation. If the decision takes longer than the committed timeframe, the additional priority or super priority service fee is not refunded.

UK eVisa — Replacing the Vignette Sticker

Background & The Transition

• How long vignette stickers were in use: The physical vignette sticker has been the standard proof of UK visa permission for over three decades — affixed directly into an applicant's passport upon successful visa approval as the sole evidence of permission to travel to the United Kingdom.

• Why this change happened: UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) developed a digital immigration system to replace physical documents with a secure digital record of identity and immigration status — known as an eVisa. Physical documents are vulnerable to loss, theft, and tampering, making a fully digital system more secure, reliable, and efficient for both applicants and border authorities.

• When this transition happened: The shift was implemented in phases. Work and study visas moved to eVisas from July 2025. The most significant phase came on 25 February 2026, when most people making a successful application for a UK visit visa — including tourist and business categories — began receiving an eVisa only, with no vignette sticker issued. This marks a permanent shift — the eVisa is now the sole proof of UK immigration permission for visitor visa applicants.

What is a UK eVisa?

A UK eVisa is a secure digital record of your identity and immigration permission, stored in a UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) online account and linked directly to your passport. There is no physical document, no sticker in your passport, and nothing to carry. Before you travel to the UK, you will need to access your eVisa through your UKVI account to confirm the permission you have been granted.

How the UK eVisa Process Works

Step 1 — Begin Your Application Complete the UK Standard Visitor visa application online at gov.uk. The application must be fully and accurately completed before proceeding to the next step.

Step 2 — Schedule Your Appointment Book your biometric appointment at your nearest VFS Global Visa Application Centre. Attendance in person is mandatory to submit your documents and enrol your biometric data.

Step 3 — Visit the Visa Application Centre Attend your appointment at the VFS Global centre on the confirmed date. Present your original documents and provide your fingerprints and digital photograph. Your passport is returned to you on the same day — you do not leave it behind for processing.

Step 4 — Await Your Decision & Access Your eVisa Once a decision is made, you will be notified by email with instructions on how to access your eVisa. Sign in to your UKVI account, confirm your eVisa is active and correctly linked to the passport you intend to travel with, and you are ready to travel to the United Kingdom.

Any vignette sticker issued before 25 February 2026 remains valid until its expiration date — no exchange is required. Applicants are strongly advised to sign in to their UKVI account before every trip to confirm their eVisa is active and correctly linked to the passport they intend to travel with.
