Elephant Jungle Sanctuary in Koh Samui is the region's first elephant sanctuary, home to elephants rescued from the logging and tourism industries. Visits run for a half day or full day depending on the option booked, with the emphasis on ethical, hands-on interaction rather than rides or shows.

Caretakers divide visitors into small groups, so you get close access as the elephants are fed a diet of rice, vitamins, vegetables and bananas, often straight from your hand. Later in the visit, you can join the elephants for a mud spa, wading into the mud alongside them as they cool off and coat their skin, or step into the pool for a swim while they shower themselves and everyone nearby with water from their trunks. Between these sessions, there is time to simply watch the elephants move through the sanctuary's jungle setting and, on some visits, walk alongside them.

Guests can also add paid community activities such as tie-dye clothing, salad making or cooking a local dish, run by the sanctuary's own staff. Rayna Tours' local team in Koh Samui handles your booking and is on hand for support before and after your visit.
