Australia — Visa Overview
About Australia
Australia is a continent, a country, and an experience unlike any other on earth. Stretching across the southern hemisphere in magnificent isolation, it is the world's sixth-largest country by land area — a land of extraordinary natural wonder, vibrant modern cities, ancient indigenous culture, and a way of life that is uniquely its own.
Sydney captivates with the iconic Opera House and Harbour Bridge, the golden sands of Bondi Beach, and a cosmopolitan energy that makes it one of the world's most liveable cities. Melbourne enchants visitors with its celebrated arts scene, world-class cuisine, and the cultural richness of its laneways and galleries. Brisbane, Perth, and Adelaide each offer their own distinct character — sun-drenched, welcoming, and brimming with life.
Beyond the cities, Australia reveals a natural world of breathtaking scale and diversity. The ancient red landscape of the Northern Territory and the sacred Uluru, the extraordinary marine ecosystem of the Great Barrier Reef — the largest coral reef system on earth — the lush rainforests of Queensland, the dramatic coastlines of Western Australia, and the stunning wilderness of Tasmania together make Australia one of the most ecologically remarkable destinations on the planet.
Australia is also a nation of world-renowned academic institutions, a powerhouse of global trade and commerce, and a deeply multicultural society that welcomes visitors from every corner of the world. Whether travelling for tourism, business, or to visit family and friends, Australia is a destination that rewards every traveller with experiences that are genuinely unforgettable.
What is an Australia Visitor Visa?
An Australia Visitor Visa is an official travel authorisation issued by the Australian Department of Home Affairs, permitting foreign nationals to enter Australia temporarily for tourism, business visits, or family visits. The applicable visa type depends entirely on the passport held by the applicant — not their country of residence.
Three Visa Pathways — Which One Applies to You?
Pathway 1 — eVisitor (Subclass 651)
Available exclusively to passport holders of European Union member states and a small number of associated countries. It is free, fully digital, and permits multiple entries with a maximum stay of 3 months per visit within a 12-month period. This pathway is not available to UAE nationals, UAE residents, KSA nationals, KSA residents, or Indian nationals.
Pathway 2 — Electronic Travel Authority — ETA (Subclass 601)
Available to select nationalities including USA, Canada, Japan, Singapore, South Korea, and others. It is a digital travel authorisation, costing AUD 20, permitting multiple entries with a maximum stay of 3 months per visit. This pathway is also not available to UAE nationals, UAE residents, KSA nationals, KSA residents, or Indian nationals.
Pathway 3 — Visitor Visa (Subclass 600)
The only applicable visa pathway for all applicants from Rayna's three markets — UAE nationals, UAE residents and expats of any nationality, KSA nationals, KSA residents and expats of any nationality, and Indian nationals. The applicable visa type is determined solely by the passport held — not by the country of residence. An Indian national residing in the UAE or KSA, for example, must apply for the Subclass 600 based on their Indian passport.
Important — Australia Visitor Visa is Fully Electronic. There is No Sticker Visa.
The Australia Visitor Visa (Subclass 600) is a fully electronic visa. Upon approval, the visa is electronically linked to the applicant's passport — there is no physical visa label, no sticker, and no stamp placed in the passport. The applicant receives an electronic visa grant letter confirming their visa conditions, entry dates, and permitted stay period. This grant letter must be kept as proof of the approved visa. The passport does not need to be submitted or handed over at any stage of the application process.
Visitor Visa (Subclass 600) — Tourist & Business
Tourist Stream — for sightseeing, leisure travel, cruising, and visiting family or friends. The permitted stay may be granted for 3, 6, or up to 12 months depending on the applicant's profile and supporting documents. The default grant is typically 3 months — strong evidence of financial capacity and genuine temporary intent supports longer grants.
Business Visitor Stream — for short-term business activities including attending meetings, conferences, trade fairs, seminars, and negotiations. Permitted activities include making general business enquiries, investigating or negotiating contracts, and conducting activities as part of an official government visit. Business visitors cannot work for or provide services to an Australian-based business, nor sell goods or services directly to the public. The permitted stay is up to 3 months.
Sponsored Family Stream — for visitors sponsored by an approved family member residing in Australia as an Australian citizen, permanent resident, or eligible New Zealand citizen.
Biometrics — Mandatory for Most Applicants
Most applicants from the UAE, India, and KSA are required to provide biometrics — fingerprints and a digital photograph — as part of the application process. After submitting the online application, applicants who are required to provide biometrics will receive an official biometrics requirement letter from the Department of Home Affairs. Upon receiving this letter, the applicant must book an appointment at the designated VFS Global or Australian Biometric Collection Centre (ABCC) in their country and attend in person within the specified timeframe. This is the only step in the entire process that requires an in-person visit — the passport itself is never submitted or retained.
Visa Validity & Permitted Stay
The validity and permitted length of stay are determined solely by the Australian Department of Home Affairs, based on the applicant's profile, travel history, financial position, and purpose of visit. The permitted stay may be granted for 3, 6, or up to 12 months. The visa validity and permitted stay are two distinct conditions — both must be strictly respected. A longer visa validity does not automatically grant a longer stay.
Health & Character Requirements
All applicants must meet Australia's health and character requirements. Depending on nationality, age, and intended length of stay, a medical examination and/or chest X-ray may be required. Medical treatment in Australia is expensive — comprehensive health insurance for the entire duration of the stay is strongly recommended, as visitors are not covered by Australia's national health scheme.
Processing Time
Processing times for the Visitor Visa (Subclass 600) as of 2026 typically range from 11 to 28 days from the date of application submission. Times may vary depending on the applicant's nationality, completeness of documentation, and application volumes. For applicants from UAE and India, a Priority Consideration Service is available for an additional fee, targeting processing within 2 business days, subject to eligibility and availability. Applicants are strongly advised to apply well in advance and not purchase non-refundable travel arrangements before the visa is granted.
