What is a New Zealand Visitor Visa?

The New Zealand Visitor Visa is an official travel authorisation issued by Immigration New Zealand — Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment — permitting eligible foreign nationals to visit New Zealand for tourism, family visits, business, or study of up to 3 months. Upon approval, the visa is issued as a fully digital eVisa — no physical sticker is placed in the passport. There is no sticker visa for New Zealand — all visitor visas are electronic.

Three Entry Routes — New Zealand

New Zealand operates a three-tier entry system depending on the applicant's passport nationality — Full Exemption, NZeTA (Visa Waiver), and Visitor Visa.

Route 1 — Full Exemption (No Visa or NZeTA Required)

Australian Citizens travelling on an Australian passport are the only nationality fully exempt from both the Visitor Visa and the NZeTA — they may enter New Zealand without any application or pre-travel authorisation whatsoever.

Route 2 — NZeTA (New Zealand Electronic Travel Authority)
Visa Waiver Countries — No Visitor Visa Required

Passport holders of the following countries do not need to apply for a Visitor Visa — instead they must obtain a New Zealand Electronic Travel Authority (NZeTA) before travel. The NZeTA is a simple online application — applied for through the official Immigration New Zealand app or website. Upon arrival in New Zealand with a valid NZeTA, a visitor visa is granted on arrival at the border.

Permitted stay for NZeTA holders:

• Up to 3 months for most nationalities
• Up to 6 months for United Kingdom passport holders

Important for UAE Nationals: UAE nationals holding an Emirati passport are on the NZeTA visa waiver list — they do not need a Visitor Visa. They must obtain an NZeTA before travel and are granted a visitor visa on arrival at the New Zealand border. Permitted stay: up to 3 months.

Important for KSA Nationals: Saudi Arabian nationals holding a Saudi passport are on the NZeTA visa waiver list — they do not need a Visitor Visa. They must obtain an NZeTA before travel and are granted a visitor visa on arrival. Permitted stay: up to 3 months.

Route 3 — Visitor Visa (eVisa — Fully Digital)
For nationalities not on the NZeTA visa waiver list

Passport holders of countries not on the visa waiver list — including Indian nationals, and UAE or KSA residents holding passports of non-waiver nationalities — must apply for a New Zealand Visitor Visa before travel. The Visitor Visa is applied for online through the official Immigration New Zealand portal — apply.immigration.govt.nz — and issued as a fully digital eVisa. There is no physical sticker — no embassy visit, and no passport submission required.

Indian Nationals: India is not on New Zealand's NZeTA visa waiver list — Indian nationals must apply for a New Zealand Visitor Visa (eVisa) through the official Immigration New Zealand portal before travel.

UAE & KSA Residents of Non-Waiver Nationalities: UAE and KSA residents holding passports from countries not on the NZeTA visa waiver list must apply for a Visitor Visa — the applicable requirement is determined by the passport held, not by UAE or KSA residency status.

Entry Summary — Rayna's Three Markets

Visa Type — Fully Digital eVisa (No Sticker)

New Zealand does not issue physical sticker visas for tourist or visitor purposes. All visitor visas — whether granted on arrival for NZeTA holders or approved in advance for Visitor Visa applicants — are issued as a fully digital eVisa. The eVisa is electronically linked to the applicant's passport — no physical stamp or sticker is placed in the passport at any stage.

Visitor Visa — Single Entry & Multiple Entry

Immigration New Zealand issues either a single-entry or multiple-entry Visitor Visa based on their assessment of the application:

Multiple-Entry Visitor Visa:

• Visit New Zealand as many times as you want while the visa is valid.
• Stay for up to 6 months in each 12-month period.
• Applicant must have been outside New Zealand for at least 9 months in the 18-month period before applying.

Single-Entry Visitor Visa:

• Entry into New Zealand once — if you leave, the visa expires.
• Stay for up to 9 months in an 18-month period.
• Issued when staying for more than 6 months, when extending a current stay, or at the discretion of Immigration New Zealand.

Permitted Activities

• Tourism, sightseeing, leisure travel, and recreational activities
• Visiting family and friends
• Study for up to 3 months in any 12-month period
• Attending conferences and business meetings
• Remote work for an employer or client based outside New Zealand — permitted

Not Permitted:

• Paid employment in New Zealand — a work visa is required
• Studying for more than 3 months — a student visa is required

Important Entry Requirements

• Passport must be valid for at least 3 months beyond the intended departure date from New Zealand.
• Evidence of sufficient funds — at least NZD 1,000 per month of stay, or NZD 400 per month if accommodation has been pre-paid.
• Confirmed return or onward travel ticket — or proof of sufficient funds to purchase one.
• Genuine intention to leave New Zealand at the end of the stay — assessed by Immigration New Zealand.
• Medical and chest X-ray certificates may be required for stays exceeding 6 months or for applicants from countries with a high incidence of tuberculosis.
• Comprehensive travel health insurance for the entire duration of stay is strongly recommended.

New Zealand Traveller Declaration (NZTD) — Mandatory for All Arrivals

All travellers arriving in New Zealand — including NZeTA and Visitor Visa holders — must complete the New Zealand Traveller Declaration (NZTD) before arrival. This collects customs, immigration, and biosecurity information and can be submitted from 24 hours before departure — at travellerdeclaration.govt.nz. This is separate from the visa and NZeTA.

Visa Fee

• New Zealand Visitor Visa fee starts from NZD 441 — confirmed from the official Immigration New Zealand portal. Fees are subject to change without prior notice. All fees are non-refundable once submitted.
• NZeTA fee: NZD 17 online or NZD 23 via the app — plus an International Visitor Conservation and Tourism Levy (IVL) of NZD 35.

Processing Time

• Visitor Visa (eVisa): 80% of applications processed within 2 weeks.
• NZeTA: Typically within 72 hours — apply at least 72 hours before departure.
