Ghana — Visa Overview
About Ghana
Ghana is one of West Africa's most vibrant, welcoming, and historically significant destinations — a nation of extraordinary cultural richness, ancient heritage, and warm, infectious hospitality that has earned it a well-deserved reputation as the Gateway to West Africa. The first sub-Saharan African country to gain independence from colonial rule in 1957 under the visionary Kwame Nkrumah, Ghana carries a profound pride in its history, culture, and identity that is immediately felt by every visitor.
Accra — Ghana's dynamic and rapidly growing capital — captivates with its extraordinary energy, world-class restaurants, vibrant arts and music scene, and a blend of colonial architecture and contemporary African design that reflects the country's confident modernisation. The historic Cape Coast — a UNESCO World Heritage Site — moves every visitor with the sobering and profoundly important Cape Coast Castle and Elmina Castle — two of the most significant sites of the transatlantic slave trade, drawing visitors from across the African diaspora in search of connection with their roots. Kumasi — the cultural capital of the Ashanti Kingdom — enchants with the magnificent Ashanti cultural centre, the Kejetia Market — one of Africa's largest — and a living tradition of extraordinary kente cloth weaving, woodcarving, and royal ceremony that has endured for centuries.
Ghana's natural landscape offers extraordinary diversity — from the canopy walkways and forest biodiversity of Kakum National Park to the hippos and waterfowl of the Volta River wetlands, from the pristine beaches of Busua and Ada Foah to the waterfalls and wildlife of Mole National Park in the north. Ghana is also the world's second largest producer of cocoa — and chocolate experiences, cocoa farm visits, and the extraordinary street food culture of Accra's night markets add unique and memorable dimensions to every visit. Safe, welcoming, and with outstanding transport infrastructure by West African standards, Ghana is a destination that rewards every traveller with an experience of genuine depth, warmth, and discovery.
What is a Ghana eVisa?
The Ghana eVisa is a fully digital travel authorisation issued by the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) in collaboration with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Ghana. Officially launched on 25 May 2026 by President John Dramani Mahama during African Union Day celebrations in Accra, the Ghana eVisa system is operated through the official portal — evisa.immigration.gov.gh — and replaces the previous physical visa application process for most nationalities. The approved eVisa is delivered directly to the applicant's registered email address and can be presented digitally or as a printed document at any Ghanaian port of entry.
Is There a Sticker Visa for Ghana?
For the vast majority of nationalities — No. Ghana's new eVisa system — launched 25 May 2026 — is fully digital. The approved eVisa is delivered by email — no physical sticker is placed in the passport. However Ghana's 56 Diplomatic Missions abroad continue to issue visas that may be placed as physical stickers for certain categories — including long-stay visas valid from 6 months to 5 years. For standard tourist and business visits, the eVisa is the primary and recommended route — fully digital, no embassy visit required.

The eVisa is fully digital — delivered by email — valid at all Ghanaian international airports and border crossings — no embassy visit required.
Route 4 — Visa on Arrival
