Garni and Geghard tour from Yerevan

This half-day tour from Yerevan visits two of Armenia's most significant historic sites, the Hellenistic-style Garni Temple and the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Geghard Monastery, with the Azat river valley running between them, and returns you to your hotel by the afternoon.

A hotel pickup in Yerevan starts the tour, and the driver-guide takes you first to Garni, a village east of the city set above the Azat river gorge and known for its ancient temple and dramatic gorge views.

The Temple of Garni is the only pre-Christian temple still standing in Armenia, built in a classical Hellenistic style and once the summer residence of Armenian kings, dedicated to the sun god. Its restored colonnade sits on a promontory above the Azat river gorge, where dark basalt cliffs drop away toward the river and the nearby Azat Reservoir comes into view. The site gives a different picture of Armenia's history, from before the country's conversion to Christianity in the early 4th century.

From Garni, the road climbs toward Geghard Monastery, with views toward Mount Ararat along the way. Geghard, meaning 'holy spear' in Armenian, takes its name from the spear once said to have pierced Christ at the crucifixion and kept at the site for centuries; it is now held in the museum at Etchmiadzin. Much of the monastery, dating from the 12th and 13th centuries, is carved directly into the surrounding cliff face, with chambers and a church cut straight into the rock. It has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2000.
