This outing with one of
Rayna Tours’ experienced guides allows you to unearth the ancient wonders of
Baku’s Old City or Icheri Sheher. As the country’s first UNESCO World Heritage Site,
it is conserved as a historical and architectural reserve. So set off on an
enlightening tour to discover the unmissable landmarks that make up this extraordinarily
antiquated part of the city.
Your experience start
right off when you board an air-conditioned private vehicle (as agreed at the
time of booking) from your hotel or desired Baku location. An entry to Icheri
Sheher region will straight rewind you to the region’s medieval Islamic era. Weave
through the narrow labyrinth of this walled complex and enjoy a deeper look at
its many beautifully preserved age-old treasures including the caravanserais,
mosques, baths, and private dwellings. You’ll even find here small old shops that
sell some strikingly one-off decorative pieces created by the local craftsmen.
One of its monumental
treasures is Maiden Tower which has stood here for centuries (at least from 12th
century). Strewn with legends, the real purpose of its existence is still under
a debate that whether it used to be a Zoroastrian shrine, a defensive fort or
an observatory. But one thing you can be certain about this structure is the
most breathtaking views that it commands over the surroundings.
Next, walk into the
palace turned museum of Shirvanshah which is acknowledged as one of the pearls
of the Azerbaijan architecture. Apart from the main two-storey structure with 50
plus rooms, the palace ground is outstanding for its several intriguing sections
including Divankhana – the stone pavilion, Bakuvi Mausoleum, Murad’s Gate,
Royal Mosque, and Hamams or bath houses. Prior to you finish your tour and head
back to your Baku location, take time to explore the Miniature Books Museum -
the world’s only museum dedicated to the miniature version of books.
