Tajikistan — Visa Overview

About Tajikistan

Tajikistan is one of Central Asia's most dramatic and spectacularly beautiful destinations — a small, landlocked mountain republic where over 93% of the country is covered by mountains, including some of the highest and most formidable peaks outside the Himalayas. Bordering Afghanistan Ā· China Ā· Kyrgyzstan Ā· and Uzbekistan — and home to the legendary Pamir Mountains known as the Roof of the World — Tajikistan offers travellers of an adventurous spirit some of the most extraordinary mountain landscapes, least-visited terrain, and most genuinely authentic cultural encounters anywhere in Asia. It is a destination for those who seek the road less travelled — a country of raw, elemental beauty that rewards the curious and the intrepid with experiences of unforgettable depth and wonder.

The Pamir Mountains — the ancient meeting point of the Hindu Kush Ā· Karakoram Ā· Tian Shan Ā· and Himalayan ranges — dominate the eastern half of the country and contain some of the highest peaks in the former Soviet Union including Ismoil Somoni Peak at 7,495 metres — formerly known as Communism Peak — and Ibn Sina Peak at 7,134 metres. The legendary Pamir Highway — one of the world's highest and most dramatic road journeys and the second highest international road in the world — traverses the Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Region (GBAO) through landscapes of breathtaking scale and elemental emptiness Ā· past ancient glaciers Ā· high-altitude lakes of extraordinary cobalt and turquoise Ā· and remote Pamiri villages where traditional hospitality has remained unchanged for centuries. Lake Karakul — a high-altitude crater lake at 3,914 metres above sea level set against a backdrop of permanently snow-capped peaks — is one of the most hauntingly beautiful and otherworldly landscapes in Central Asia.

The Wakhan Valley — shared with Afghanistan and following the ancient Silk Road route — offers stunning views of the Hindu Kush and Karakoram ranges and encounters with one of the most remote Ā· welcoming Ā· and culturally intact communities on earth — the Wakhi people whose traditions of hospitality and ancient Ismaili Muslim culture have endured for over a millennium. Dushanbe — Tajikistan's pleasant and rapidly modernising capital — surprises visitors with its broad tree-lined boulevards Ā· excellent museums including the National Museum of Tajikistan with its extraordinary collection of Buddhist art and Silk Road artefacts Ā· and a warmth of welcome that characterises the Tajik people throughout the country. The ancient city of Khujand — Tajikistan's second city in the fertile Fergana Valley — and the turquoise mountain lakes of Iskanderkul and Nofin complete a travel experience of extraordinary natural grandeur and historical depth. Tajikistan is a destination for the true adventurer — a country where the landscapes are epic Ā· the people are warm Ā· and the experience of genuine discovery is still entirely possible.

What is a Tajikistan eVisa?

The Tajikistan eVisa is a fully digital travel authorisation issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Tajikistan — applied for entirely online through the official Tajikistan eVisa portal — evisa.tj — and delivered electronically to the applicant's registered email address upon approval. The approved eVisa must be printed and presented alongside the valid passport at the Tajikistan port of entry. No embassy visit is required.

Important — GBAO Permit:
Travel to the Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Region (GBAO) — which includes the Pamir Highway Ā· Wakhan Valley Ā· and all eastern Tajikistan — requires a separate GBAO Permit in addition to the standard eVisa. The GBAO Permit can be applied for simultaneously with the eVisa through the official evisa.tj portal at a small additional fee. Travellers planning to visit the Pamirs must ensure they have the GBAO Permit — failure to carry it may result in fines or refusal of entry into the GBAO region.

Important — Official Portal Only:
The official Tajikistan eVisa portal is evisa.tj — operated exclusively by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Tajikistan. Rayna Tours submits all Tajikistan eVisa applications exclusively through this official government portal.
