Albania ā Visa Overview
About Albania
Albania is one of Europe's most captivating and authentically undiscovered destinations ā a small Balkan nation on the Adriatic and Ionian coasts of southeastern Europe that has been quietly emerging as one of the continent's most exciting travel secrets. With a dramatic landscape of soaring mountain ranges, crystal-clear turquoise waters, ancient ruins, and vibrant cities, Albania offers an extraordinary depth of experience at a fraction of the cost of its better-known Mediterranean neighbours.
Tirana ā Albania's colourful and rapidly transforming capital ā enchants with its extraordinary energy, vibrant cafĆ© culture, world-class restaurants, and a distinctive blend of Ottoman, Italian, and communist-era architecture that reflects the country's fascinating and turbulent history. The Blloku neighbourhood ā once exclusively reserved for the communist elite ā is now one of the Balkans' most vibrant social and dining districts. The UNESCO-listed historic centres of Berat and GjirokastĆ«r ā known respectively as the City of a Thousand Windows and the City of Stone ā are among the best-preserved Ottoman-era towns in the entire Balkans region. The ancient ruins of Butrint ā a UNESCO World Heritage Site ā reveal layer upon layer of Greek, Roman, Byzantine, and Venetian civilisation in one of Europe's most extraordinary archaeological landscapes.
Albania's Riviera ā stretching along the Ionian Sea from VlorĆ« to SarandĆ« ā offers some of the Mediterranean's most pristine and uncrowded beaches, with crystal-clear turquoise waters, dramatic cliff scenery, and charming fishing villages that remain delightfully authentic. The Albanian Alps ā known as the Accursed Mountains ā draw trekkers and adventurers with dramatic peaks, traditional highland villages, and the legendary Theth and ValbonĆ« valleys ā among Europe's most spectacular hiking destinations. SarandĆ« ā the gateway to the Albanian Riviera ā sits directly across the channel from Corfu and offers extraordinary ancient ruins at Butrint just 20 minutes away. Safe, welcoming, extraordinarily affordable, and rapidly gaining recognition as a must-visit European destination, Albania rewards every traveller with a genuinely authentic and unforgettable experience.
