Kakheti Wine Region and Sighnaghi Tour

The Kakheti wine region and Sighnaghi tour is a full-day trip from Tbilisi into eastern Georgia's main wine-producing region, taking in mountain scenery, a historic monastery, a hilltop town, and a winery visit over about eight hours with a private driver-guide.

Your driver-guide collects you from your Tbilisi hotel for the drive out to Kakheti, passing villages, farmland, and vineyard country along the way as the landscape opens out toward the Caucasus foothills.

Bodbe Monastery

The first stop is Bodbe Monastery, the resting place of St. Nino, credited with bringing Christianity to Georgia in the 4th century. Originally built in the 9th century and rebuilt in the 17th, the monastery stands above the Alazani Valley on the edge of Sighnaghi, its grounds looking out over vineyards that stretch toward the horizon.

Sighnaghi, the City of Love

From the monastery you continue into Sighnaghi itself, a hilltop town built inside an 18th-century fortress wall that once ran for about 5 kilometres around the settlement. Known locally as the City of Love, its cobbled lanes and balconied houses look out over the Alazani Valley and the Caucasus foothills beyond, and you have time to walk through the town at your own pace.

Winery visit

The day continues with a stop at a Kakhetian winery for a tasting of the region's traditional wines, produced using methods with a long history in this part of Georgia, giving you a sense of why Kakheti is considered the heart of Georgian winemaking.

You are driven back to your Tbilisi hotel by around 6 pm. Rayna's team in Tbilisi arranges the driver-guide for the day and stays reachable throughout your trip into the wine country.

• This tour visits an active monastery: women should wear a head covering, a skirt or dress reaching below the knee, and a top covering the shoulders; trousers are not permitted for women at these sites.
• Men should wear long trousers down to the ankle, remove hats before entering the church, and keep the chest and shoulders covered; shorts and tank tops are not allowed.
