The Ananuri, Gudauri, and Kazbegi day tour is a full-day trip from Tbilisi into the Georgian Military Highway and the high Caucasus, taking in a lakeside fortress, a mountain resort, and a 14th-century church under Mount Kazbek, over about eight hours with a private driver-guide.

Pickup (9:45 am to 10:15 am)

Your driver-guide collects you from your Tbilisi hotel for the drive north along the Georgian Military Highway, one of the main routes connecting Georgia with the high Caucasus and the Russian border.

Ananuri Fortress Complex

The first stop is Ananuri Fortress Complex, a walled group of churches and towers overlooking the Jinvali Water Reservoir, where the turquoise water and surrounding hills make for one of the drive's first good viewpoints and a chance to walk around the fortress grounds.

Pasanauri and Gudauri

Continuing north, the road passes through Pasanauri, where the White and Black Aragvi rivers meet in a visible line of contrasting water, before climbing to Gudauri, a mountain resort sitting at around 2,190 metres. From the Russia-Georgia Friendship Monument at the Gudauri viewpoint, you look out over the Caucasus range and the valley below, with the ski slopes visible in season.

Kazbegi and Gergeti Trinity Church

The tour continues over Jvari Pass to Stepantsminda, known locally as Kazbegi, where a 4x4 jeep takes you up to Gergeti Trinity Church. Built in the 14th century, the church stands at around 2,170 metres, with Mount Kazbek, one of the highest peaks in the Caucasus, rising behind it and dominating the skyline on a clear day.

You are driven back to your Tbilisi hotel by around 6 pm. Rayna's team in Tbilisi arranges the driver-guide and jeep transfer, and stays reachable throughout your day in the mountains.
