A full day at the Seven Lakes of Tajikistan

This full-day tour takes you from Samarkand to the Seven Lakes, known locally as Haft Kul, in Tajikistan's Fann Mountains. The drive out crosses the Uzbekistan-Tajikistan border, passing through mountain roads, small villages and changing scenery along the way, with the terrain shifting from open countryside to steeper mountain passes as you get closer to the lakes.

Exploring the seven lakes

Once at Haft Kul, you visit each of the seven lakes, each known for its own shade of blue and green water. Your guide shares local legends about the lakes and the communities living around them as you move between viewpoints, giving context to a part of the region most visitors to Uzbekistan never see. A picnic lunch is served by one of the lakes, giving you time to sit by the water and take in the surroundings before continuing to the next viewpoint.

Photography and free time

The lakes and surrounding mountains give you plenty to photograph through the day, from close-up shots of the water to wider views of the valley below. This is a day suited to travellers who want a break from city sightseeing in Samarkand and a look at a different, more rural side of the region, away from the usual historic sites and markets.

Return to Samarkand

After the visit, you're driven back across the border to Samarkand, with drop-off at the same point you were picked up. Between the drive, the lakes and the guide's commentary along the way, it makes for a long but well-rounded day out from the city, best suited to travellers happy to spend most of the day on the road for the scenery at the end of it.
