Khao Kheow Zoo

Khao Kheow Zoo, outside Pattaya, is a large open-air zoo where animals roam across habitats designed to resemble their natural surroundings rather than fixed enclosures. It's one of the larger zoos in Asia, home to more than 8,000 animals, and makes for a half-day or full-day outing.

The grounds are divided into zones grouped by species, and a tram runs through them, giving you a break from the heat and letting you hop off at an exhibit and rejoin the tram once you are done. On foot or by tram, you'll pass elephants swimming, flamingos wading around a lake, lions and tigers resting or pacing, penguins, and rarer animals such as the pygmy hippopotamus. Animal shows run through the day, mixing entertainment with basic education about the animals involved, and the instructors leading them double as guides who can answer questions about the species on show.
