The Zugspitze and Garmisch day tour is a full-day excursion from Munich into the Bavarian Alps, taking in Germany's highest mountain and the town of Garmisch-Partenkirchen. The tour runs for around 9 hours in a small group limited to eight participants, with a local guide travelling with you throughout the day.
The day begins at one of several meeting points around central Munich, where you join your guide and a small group in an air-conditioned van. From there, the route runs south into the mountains, passing through Garmisch-Partenkirchen, a town known for its traditional Bavarian architecture and its setting at the foot of the Alps.
From the Garmisch-Partenkirchen area, a cable car carries the group up to the Zugspitze summit, climbing steadily above forested slopes and open valleys. The ascent is part of the experience in its own right, with the views widening as the car gains height and the surrounding peaks come into view one by one.
At the top, on a clear day you can see across the Alps and into neighbouring Austria, with snow capped peaks visible in most directions. There is time to walk around the viewing areas, take photographs and simply take in the scale of the mountains before heading back down.
On the way down, the tour stops at a mountain hut, and the group can visit Germany's highest beer garden for a drink or a snack, paid for locally. It is a relaxed way to close out the mountain portion of the day before the drive back to Munich.
Your guide stays with the group for the full day, so there is a familiar point of contact throughout, and Rayna Tours' local team is available if anything about your booking needs attention before or after the tour.
