Munich to Neuschwanstein Castle Full Day Tour

This full day tour takes you from Munich to Neuschwanstein Castle, the nineteenth century royal residence set on a hill above the Bavarian countryside. A guide travels with the group throughout the day, and the journey each way takes around two hours by train or van.

Journey to the Alps

The route runs south from Munich toward Fussen, a small town at the foothills of the Alps. As the group gets closer, the castle comes into view above the surrounding forest, with the mountains forming a backdrop for the rest of the day. The drive or train ride itself is part of the appeal, tracing a path through open Bavarian farmland before the land starts to rise.

A fairytale castle with a real history

Neuschwanstein Castle was built in the nineteenth century for King Ludwig II of Bavaria. Its white towers, drawn from mythology and fairy tale imagery, are widely said to have influenced the design of Sleeping Beauty Castle at Disneyland. Walking the grounds, the guide shares the story of Ludwig II, an eccentric and reclusive king whose grand building projects eventually led to his downfall, and explains how the castle came to be finished only after his death.

Viewpoints and photo stops

The tour builds in time at the best viewpoints around the property, taking in views over the surrounding lakes, valleys and mountains. The group also sees the neighbouring Hohenschwangau Castle, where Ludwig II spent much of his childhood, and crosses Marienbruecke, a bridge suspended above a waterfall gorge that gives one of the best known views back toward Neuschwanstein. Weather permitting, there is sometimes time to relax by the lake before the group regroups for the next stop.

Optional castle interior visit

Entry to the interior of Neuschwanstein Castle is not included in this tour. Guests who want to see the castle's furnished rooms can buy a same day ticket and join a guided walk through the interior, with fast track entry helping to avoid the queues that build up later in the day. The guide explains what to expect inside so guests can decide whether the add on is worth their time.
