Munich to Konigssee Scenic Day Trip By Van

This full-day trip travels from Munich to Lake Konigssee in the Berchtesgaden Alps, following the German Alpine Road through the mountains. Drive to Berchtesgaden

The day starts with a scenic drive along the Alpine Road into the Berchtesgaden valley, with mountains rising on either side as the route leaves Munich behind. The journey itself is part of the appeal, running through some of the region's most scenic stretches of Bavaria's best known Alpine scenery.

Boat ride on Konigssee

At the lake, you board a boat that crosses its clear, deep green water, framed by steep cliffs on both sides. Partway across, the boat's crew is known to demonstrate Konigssee's natural echo against the rock face, and to point out the Sleeping Witch rock formation on the surrounding ridgeline.

St. Bartholoma and Lake Obersee

The boat stops at St. Bartholoma, a chapel on the lake shore dating back to 1134, sitting at the foot of the towering Watzmann massif. From the Salet landing point, a short walk leads to Lake Obersee, a smaller lake overlooked by the Rothbach waterfall, among the tallest in Germany.

Winter route

Between mid October and mid April, the boat runs only as far as St. Bartholoma, so the Obersee and waterfall section is replaced with free time exploring Berchtesgaden's old town instead.

Boat tickets and lunch are paid locally and are not part of the tour price. By early evening, the group heads back toward Munich, closing out a day built around the lake's still water and the mountains that surround it.
