This ticket covers entry to a traditional Vietnamese water puppet show in Hanoi, a folk art form that began in the flooded rice fields of Northern Vietnam more than a thousand years ago. Puppeteers stand hidden behind a bamboo screen and control handcrafted wooden puppets across a water stage using rods and string mechanisms concealed beneath the surface.

Each performance strings together short folk stories drawn from Vietnamese village life, legends and festivals, with recurring characters such as dragons, phoenixes, fishermen, farmers and buffaloes. A live orchestra plays traditional instruments, including drums, bamboo flutes, a monochord, cymbals and other string instruments, alongside folk singing and narration that ties the scenes together. Traditional water puppet theatres, including this one, are built around an indoor pool that doubles as the stage, so the setting itself is part of the performance.

The theatre is located in central Hanoi, close to Hoan Kiem Lake, making it an easy stop to combine with a walk around the old quarter. Rayna's local team issues and manages this ticket, so you have a point of contact if anything comes up with your booking.
