This full-day tour from Colombo combines two of Sri Lanka's most visited heritage sites, the Sigiriya rock fortress and the Dambulla cave temple, with an optional wildlife safari, starting at 6:00 am.

Hotel pickup (6:00 am onwards)

Your driver collects you from your Colombo hotel in an air-conditioned car, van or bus and begins the drive inland toward Sigiriya, with an English-speaking driver at the wheel for the day. The drive gives a first look at Sri Lanka's central countryside before the two main sites come into view.

Sigiriya rock fortress

At Sigiriya, guide assistance is available in English, German, French or Spanish for the climb up the rock, a fifth-century royal palace site that rises about 180 metres above the surrounding plain. The ascent passes through the remains of a monumental lion gateway partway up, and the summit opens onto views across the plains below. The climb covers more than a thousand steps in total, so comfortable footwear and a steady pace make the ascent easier.

Dambulla cave temple

From Sigiriya, the route continues to the Dambulla cave temple complex, where a series of caves cut directly into the hillside hold Buddhist statues and murals built up over centuries. A stop at a local village along the way includes traditional craft demonstrations, with time to browse handmade souvenirs.

Optional national park safari

Travellers on the all-inclusive option can add a jeep safari through a national park before heading back, with a chance to see wildlife in its natural surroundings. King coconut water and bottled water are provided through the day to help with the heat.

The tour ends with the drive back to your Colombo hotel, retracing much of the same route through the countryside covered earlier that morning. Rayna's own team runs the transfers and guide arrangements for this tour, with local support on call if your plans need to change.
