This day trip from Bishkek takes you into Ala Archa National Park, an alpine park in the Kyrgyz Ala-Too range around 40 kilometers south of the city, for a morning of walking trails, mountain views, and time in the open air away from the city.
A roundtrip transfer picks you up from your Bishkek hotel from 10:00 am, and a local guide travels with you for the visit, staying with your group throughout the walk.
Ala Archa was established as a nature park in 1976 and covers close to 165 square kilometers, with the terrain rising from around 1,500 meters at the park gate to peaks nearing 4,900 meters. Once inside, your guide leads you along walking trails through juniper forest and past mountain streams, with the glaciated peaks of the Kyrgyz Ala-Too range visible for much of the walk. The park's name comes from the Kyrgyz words for speckled juniper, the tree that covers much of its lower slopes. The park is also home to grey marmots, ibex and other alpine wildlife, and it is one of the few places in Central Asia where the elusive snow leopard is still found in the wild, though sightings on a day visit are rare.
You can pause along the trail to take photos of the surrounding peaks and valleys, and a bottle of drinking water is provided for the walk. The pace stays relaxed throughout, leaving plenty of time to enjoy the alpine scenery before the drive back to Bishkek. Depending on how far you walk, you may catch views of glacier-fed streams cutting through the valley and, on clear days, distant snow-capped summits further into the range.
Rayna's local team in Bishkek arranges the transfer and guide for this trip and stays available for support before and after your day in the park.
