The Berlin Wall Museum at Checkpoint Charlie sits at the historic border crossing on Friedrichstrasse and gives a powerful introduction to the story of Berlin's division. Founded on October 19, 1962, shortly after the Wall went up, it began as a protest against the barrier and a support point for people seeking help.
Inside, original artifacts from real escape attempts are on display, including a hot air balloon, a mini submarine, cars, and even an aircraft used to cross from East to West. Refugees and their supporters donated many of these objects themselves after successfully fleeing, so the collection reflects the tools that carried people to freedom rather than replicas built for display. Alongside the artifacts, the exhibitions trace personal stories of East Germans who risked their lives against the regime of the German Democratic Republic, and explain how the museum itself grew into a base for organizing escape plans and raising awareness, contributing to the wider movement that eventually led to the Wall's fall.
The visit is self-guided, with no audio guide or live tour included, so you can spend as much or as little time as you like with each display. Rayna Tours' local team takes care of your booking and is on hand if you need help before or after your visit.
