Icherisheher, or the Old City, is Baku's walled historic core, dating back to at least the twelfth century. It was inscribed as Azerbaijan's first UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2000 and contains the Maiden Tower, the Palace of the Shirvanshahs, mosques, caravanserais and narrow stone streets.
Yes. The Walled City of Baku, together with the Palace of the Shirvanshahs and the Maiden Tower, was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in December 2000, the first site in Azerbaijan to receive that status.
The Maiden Tower is a cylindrical stone structure in Icherisheher, believed to date from the twelfth century with foundations that may be older still. It stands close to thirty metres high across eight levels and is widely used as a symbol of Baku.
