Date palms have been integral to the Emirati culture and heritage for more than 5000 years. If you’re intrigued to know more about this wonder plant that flourish only in dryer climate and surroundings, one attraction you should not miss while in Dubai is the recently opened Palm Oasis Park, earlier known as Nakheel Park. Intricately yet immaculately modeled to take after a giant palm tree, this 11-hectare Park honors the role of palms in shaping the region’s rich culture and history.
True to its name and unique design, the Palm Oasis Park wraps in an astonishing spectacle of several different varieties of palms brought in from all seven emirates of the UAE. Overall, it consists of more than 1500 palms representing 39 unique species of palms as well as over 300 date types, with each of its fronds representing one date palm variety. An easy scan of QR (Quick Response) codes seen at the fronds’ entry points will give you a detailed understanding of the distinct date palm species.
Beyond your rendezvous with dates, the whole ambience makes you feel that you’re amidst a cool serene oasis. At the heart of the park is a beautiful lake surrounded by lush plants; it not only encompasses palms but also 30,000 plus ornamental shrubs and close to 100 decorative trees. There are also exclusive children’s play sections, cafeterias, and elegant shady sitting areas strewn all across the park. And the best thing is that it plays hosts to several activities and events that celebrate the country’s cultural heritage, mainly the date festival.
Another of the noteworthy aspects of the facility is that it’s absolutely eco-friendly and energy-efficient. See the traditional irrigation system, known as falaj, which interestingly has prevailed in the country for over 4000 years. That’s not all; majority of its lightings are supported by solar energy. So, whether you’re keen to know about the local heritage or simply need a respite from the city’s glamorous sights, the Palm Oasis Park is one of the coolest hangout places in Dubai.
